Moxie Mentor Jo Avery At Home

As part of our Scotland trip we popped in to see Moxie Mentor and well known Quilter, writer and blogger Jo Avery at her home near Linlithgow.

It was great to finally meet Jo as we had done all our chatting by phone and zoom.

Prior to getting her Handi Quilter Moxie with Loft Frame, Jo had never had a longarm before so she was the perfect person to share her experiences of the Moxie. You can read all about her longarm journey on her Blog.

Here are some photos from our trip of Jo's Moxie room, studio and the beautiful hand-crafter quilts, wall hangings, bags and creative pieces. Part of the joy for me is in the freshness of the colour palette and style that Jo has.

Lovely organic free motion shapes on this Bedding Plants quilt.

Channel Locks are perfect for locking the wheels in the horizontal or vertical direction to create a really modern look. Combine it with this gorgeous design and fabrics and fabulous!

While we were with Jo, we ran through some of the regular maintenance that we do on the machine and the frame. The machine just needs to be kept lint free around the needle and bobbincase area, sometimes taking the stitch plate off to access the bobbin area to give it a good clean. Every bobbin change a drop of oil is put at the bottom of the bobbincase assembly area.

The frame needs to be kept lint free too. A piece of wadding rubbed along the tracks will clean the lint off.

Jo had experienced an issue with her circles as she was finding it more difficult to achieve really circular shapes so we focused on the wheels on the carriage and the machine. Lint and oil can build up and get compressed forming quite a hard substance. You can see how we really had to clean out the pieces that had built up. After it had all been cleaned Jo found the issue had been resolved.

It was wonderful to see Jo and to meet her husband Jonathan, who builds tiny houses. Jo's Studio is a lovely example of a beautiful "she shed" that Jonathan built.

Lots of quilts are in process and on the design board so we can't wait to see what Jo quilts next - follow Jo on Instagram. @joaverystitch
