Wind Your Bobbins - We're Going Quilting! Saturday Live 13th February 11am

Join us for our weekly 11am Saturday Live catchup with our customers and quilters from the UK and beyond.

This week it's all about bobbins, bobbincases, hooks, cleaning and maintenance, filling bobbins, pre-filled bobbins and more! So don't miss our tips and tricks interspersed with tales from the quilting world of Liz and Pete at Pinhole Quilting.

Here's a few photos of the things we'll be talking about. This week we have a Special Offer and a new Special Offers page on our website where we'll focus on the items that are featured on Facebook Live.

The Handi Quilter Bobbin box is perfect for storing your M Size Bobbins for your Handi Quilter. We've only gone and filled it with 30 of the Wonderful Decobob Prewounds making it pretty handy when you don't need 24 red, blue or gold, but 3? Well 3 would be just tickety boo. Thank you. That's what we thought.

Not only that but until Friday 19th February 2021 12 noon we've reduced them from £38 to £30.40 - 20% OFF!!  If we run out and you'd like to place an order before the offer ends just email us at quilt@pinholequilting.co.uk

The colours are: 111 Metal Grey, 202 Red, 115 Taupe, 301 Navy, 118 Soft Yellow, 131 Gold, 205 Soft Pink, 113 Light Grey, 506 Moss Green, 112 Linen.

In the session we'll talk about some of the ways you can fill bobbins or buy them pre-filled. Here's some images of what we'll be covering.

Pete has prepared a video on the M Class Bobbincases.

The video is great for understanding more about your bobbincase and what a backlash spring is. After watching it you won't panic if your backlash spring springs out. If you can't find it you might want to though. It's OK, we have spares.

Handi Quilter sensibly have two suppliers of their bobbin cases and hooks - one in Italy and one in Japan. Cerliani and Koban to be precise. You'll see they look a little different. We carry spares for both.

So, how about bobbins?

The Handi Quilter machines take M Size bobbins and you can buy empty ones (because we never have enough right?). They come in packs of 8 or you can buy a pre-filled gorgeous box of them in purple.

Now we're talking.

We recommend that you do regular maintenance on the area under the stitch plate of the machine as well as brushing out and oiling every bobbin change.

This quick video is a reminder of the main points.

It helps if you can imagine what is happening to the thread in order to form the stitch

This is a handy You Tube video of the process - this shows feed dogs which we don't have on our machines but the process is the same.

Here are some close-ups of the parts of our machines that involve the maintenance of the bobbin, bobbincase and hook assembly areas.

We recommend cleaning every few months especially after linty threads

Screws have been removed from the stitch plate

Stitch plate with fluff that needs a wipe!

A cleaned bobbincase assembly area

Canned air can be used on the Moxie, Amara, Forte, Infinity and Capri

Rotate the handwheel at the back of the machine if there's a thread nest.

The two metal moving parts need good lubrication to maintain the hook integrity

Hook Assembly - the hook shaft goes in the hole at the top

You can see the hook on this photo - it's the sharp pointy metal bit by Abigail's thumbnail!

We hope that his has been a useful post and that you enjoy(ed) Facebook Live on bobbins and bobbincases.

If you need a refresher or instructions on using the HQ Bobbinwinder we cover most of the aspects of the bobbwinder on this video.

Checklist for achieving good bobbin tension on your own bobbins:

  • Use M class quality bobbins from Handi Quilter
  • Check integrity of bobbin (not bent, damaged or warped)
  • Quality thread on bobbin
  • Bobbinwinder set up correctly - bobbin not coning or with an uneven wind
  • Check under the bobbincase outer spring for fluff with the edge of a business card
  • Clean the inside of the bobbincase with the brush
  • Drop test for tension
  • Adjust bobbincase spring as required
  • Clean inside hook assembly and the area around it every bobbin change
  • Oil hook assembly every bobbin change
  • Every few months take off the stitch plate and give everything a good clean
